A vision for the future
The Visionary Leadership in Challenging Times lecture series at Leicester Castle Business School was set up to not only inform but also to inspire our current students. Created in 2016 the lecture series has already seen a number of world leading figures from industries such as the creative arts, education, local government and sport come and pass their experience and expertise onto our Leicester Castle Business School students.
Speaking about the lecture series Leicester Castle Business School Principal Professor Dana Brown said: “The aim is to help business students see they can be that person – these are real people who have climbed up the career ladder. Students will see that the trajectory to get there is a real one. The road to the top is never easy or clear and we want students to understand this, and we also want them to know that they can have setbacks but still achieve success.”
The inaugural Visionary Leadership in Challenging Times series ran during the 2016-17 academic year. Please visit our YouTube channel to view a brief question and answer session with our speakers.

The UK is a leader in sustainable and responsible finance. This kind of finance is longer term than the norm, pays far greater attention to environmental, social and governance factors, and actively seeks to understand how already evident trends such as climate change, resource depletion and overly aggressive tax strategies destroy value whilst mitigation techniques can create value. These approaches are big business: a survey by the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF) last year suggested some £1.1 trillion pounds was managed this way in the UK. Banks are also heavily involved with Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland among firms making commitments in this area. In total UKSIF members manage, bank or advise on over £7 trillion. In his talk, Simon Howard will discuss the current position, trends that can be discerned and likely future developments.
Simon Howard joined UKSIF as Chief Executive in May 2013 and is a former Group Chief Investment Officer with over twenty years of investment management experience. During a City career that started in 1990, he has been Group Chief Investment Officer at Liverpool Victoria, Head of Investments at Friends Provident and Managing Director of 3i Asset Management. Prior to joining UKSIF, Simon was Head of Sustainable Financial Markets at the charity Forum for the Future. Simon moved into sustainability after being asked repeatedly to forecast long-term asset class returns. These are very likely to be materially different to those of the past as a variety of environmental crises, e.g. climate change and resource depletion, bite. He now uses his expertise to support the efforts of the wider sustainable finance community to adapt to benefit their clients.
